Shri Narendra Modi today assumed office as the Fifteenth Prime Minister of India. He offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi in his office at South Block, and assumed charge of the office of Prime Minister.
Shri Narendra Modi has focused on good governance initiatives as well as development to bring about qualitative change in the lives of the people. He has adopted the guiding principle of “Minimum Government and Maximum Governance” and also rationalization with a commitment to bring a change in the work culture and style of governance.
Rural Development (RD) Minister and the Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation and of Panchayati Raj Shri Gopinath Munde said that integrated development of villages, tackling sanitation problem and effective implementation of Land Acquisition policy will be his key priorities in the new government. Talking to media in New Delhi on May 27 after taking charge of the Ministry of Rural Development, the Minister said, he is in favour of MGNREGA, but his aim will be to remove the shortcomings in the rural job scheme for its transparent implementation. He said, MGNREGA will be linked to the all round progress of the villages as creation of jobs and development should go hand in hand.

Dwelling
on the issue of sanitation, Shri Munde said that it would be the endeavour of
the Government that each household should have a toilet, besides laying stress
on community sanitation. He, however lamented that the budget provision for the
sanitation is very low, nearly 4,260 crore rupees , whereas the enormity of the
problem is well known to all. He said, all efforts will be made for the
construction of low cost toilets in the rural households.
Shri Munde also defended the Land Acquisition Policy saying that it is not against the industrialisation and urbanisation as being reported in a section of the media. He said, the new land acquisition act is also farmer friendly as they will get compensation for loss of land at market price.
The
newly appointed Union Minister of Finance, Shri Arun Jaitely assumed charge of
his office in New Delhi on May 27. Later during his brief media interaction, the Finance
Minister Shri Jaitely said that his priorities would be to tackle inflation,
boost economic growth and follow the path of fiscal consolidation among others.
The Finance Minister also held a meeting with the senior officials of the Ministry to have a first hand information regarding the ongoing issues and the forthcoming challenges facing the Indian economy among others.
Shri Prakash Javadekar took charge
of his new assignment as Minister of Information & Broadcasting in New
Delhi on May 27. After assuming office, Shri Javadekar said freedom of press is
the pillar of democracy. He added press freedom is imperative for the success
of democracy as it gives a rainbow of opinion. He also mentioned that the media
itself suffices for self-regulation.
The Minister also touched upon the idea of “Mazboot Bharat, Viksit Bharat” reiterating the vision of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in this regard. He added that we have a majority for the government but we need cooperation of the entire country to make a strong and developed nation by 2025.
