Unsocial social media

Internet, being coded by many as faceless world and social sites being ever present invisible society, are raising concerns over roles of Internet and social media. While many lauded its role in case of Egypt, ugly faces of Internet especially social networking sites are becoming eminent day by day. In National Integration Meet (NIC) in Delhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh too expressed deep concern over and questioned the role of the various social sites in spreading communal tension during Muzaffarnagar mayhem. It is true that social networking sites are great platform to express one’s opinion. However, it is also necessary to ensure that opinions are not made to spread unlawful or anti-national messages. Importantly, if international terror agencies use social networking to spread hatred, the effect would be devastating and peace will be at peril. Such acts will do more harm than benefits of freedom of speech. Thus it is imperative that cyber world become cautious to ensure that people do not indulge in unsocial activities using platform of social sites.
